Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays since I was younger. When I was growing up my brother and I would always get dressed up, my dad would do our makeup (he’s a theatre professor), and we’d go out trick or treating in our neighborhood. But another part of Halloween that I love, past trick or treating, is all the movies that go along with the season. During the month of October I have a stack of Halloween themed movies that I watch leading up to October 31st and then on the 31st I watch scary movies with my dad. But until that point I love watching the following happy, light hearted family Halloween movies. I hope that you enjoy this list and maybe make a couple or all them part of your family’s Halloween traditions.
My Top 10 Favorite Halloween Movies: Family Edition
10. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
A different take on the typical Halloween movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas, is about Jack the Pumpkin King and his quest to bring the Christmas spirit to all. One day Jack gets board with his every day scare-and-scream routine, so he decides to find something past his norm. He discovers Christmas town and longs to bring the joy of Christmas to everyone but his mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for all the good boys and girls. This movie is fun to watch through it’s singing to the fun pilot. Will Jack save Christmas while spreading the Christmas spirit or will everything go up in flames.
9. Monster Squad (1987)
Monster Squad is oldie but a goodie. Its about a group of kids that are monster fanatics that form a group called The Monster Squad when Count Dracula and his army of monster show up in their town. Even though some of the special effects aren’t as impressive as what they can do now, it’s still a great movie to watch during October that the whole family can enjoy. Your kids will be wanting to create their own monster squad, I know I do and I’m a twenty-something wifey.
7-8. Twitches 1 & 2 (2005) (2007)
Twitches is about two girls that were born on Halloween and on their twenty first birthday they don’t only learn that they are twins but that they are also witches from another realm. Through out the first film you follow them on their adventures of finding out that they are sisters, witches, and how to fight the darkness destroying their home.
In Twitches Too, the girls have been witches for maybe a month or so. They are starting to grow into their powers and learning how to be Princess while maintaining their normal lives. This time a familiar face shows up that they have to battle to save someone that they love. These are fun films that though I’m not sure if most guys would enjoy them, the girls in your life are sure to have a good time watching them.
6. Return to Halloweentown (2006)
The Halloweentown movies are some of my favorites to watch around October. This the last one they made. It is about Marnie and her going off to college in Halloweentown to help perfect her craft and the adventures she must go on to the save the town from yet another treat. Out of the four I would have to say that even though I do enjoy this movie, it is my lest favorite due to the lead character, Marnie, is played by a different actor than from the first three movies. Overall though it is still a fun movie.
5. Halloweentown High (2004)
Halloweentoon High is about Marnie trying to bridge the gab between her two worlds and bringing her friends from Halloweentown to high school in the mortal world. They have to work through their differences and keep the unknown treat to them at bay. Again not my top out of the four part series but still a fun movie to watch around Halloween.
4. Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993)
Double, Double, Toil and Trouble is about the Farmer twins who’s family is in trouble with their debts to where they might lose their house. The twins are determined not to let that happen and will do whatever they need to to make sure it doesn’t. When their Aunt Agatha denies their family any help, they decide to take things into their own hangs when a graver digger tells them about their Aunt being a witch. Throughout this movie you follow the twins as they work to get the moon stone from their Aunt Agatha so they can save their other Aunt, Sofia, from her sister and save their family. Growing up I loved watching all the Mary Kate and Ashley movies and this was one of favorites that they made. I always try to watch it around Halloween time.
Now out of the four Halloweentown movies, the first is by far my favorite. This is were story starts, young Marnie learn’s that she, her siblings, her mother, and her grandmother are all witches from another dimension. When Marnie learns that they are all witches, she and her sibling follows her grandmother back to Halloweentown. While there they learn all about their heritage but someone is treating Halloweentown and it is up to them to save it.
It’s two years later and Marnie has been learning all she can from her grandmother about being a witch. While at their families Halloween party, Marnie meets a cute boy. When trying to impress him she takes him to her grandmothers hidden bedroom. Unknown to Marnie, he can’t be trusted and he takes her grandmothers spell book while in her room. He cast a spell on all of Halloweentown and it is up to Marnie to save them. This is a great squeal that you’ll love just as much as the first one.
1. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Hocus Pocus is my all time favorite family friendly Halloween movies. Out of all ten of the movies I have mentioned this is the one that I try and make sure that I watch at least once during the month of October.
Hocus Pocus is about the three Sanderson sisters who are accidentally resurrected by Max, his younger sister Dani, and Allison. They all must work together to send the sisters back to were they came from and keep them from sucking the souls of the young children in their town, all before sunrise.
